I don\'t know how potent the Seljuks in Impetus are - but enough space on the table given, they schould be a dangerous opponent.
Yes they are very dangerous, however my worries are less to do with how hard an army is, but rather the game it gives. Virtually every system has the same problem with these type of medium/light cavalry based armies where they spend the game shooting and running the whole time until turning on you when you are worn down unless you manage to catch them and that is providing you have the right troops and infantry are pretty useless so you needs lots of cavalry and missile troops which in turn makes your own army a bit stale. Oh, your correct on the table size as that affects things as well as too small is a problem for Seljuks and to big a problem for the opponent which makes things that much harder to get right for a balanced game.
This is fine if one or two armies are like this, but if say most or all are like this then I fear the event may lead to frustration and frankly boredom and this is my primary concern in avoiding. What I hope to see is a good balance of say something of the nature of at least half Fatamid infantry based armies and the other half shoot and scoot armies to help keep the games fresh and challenging for all involved.
Are the Fatimids better suited for an frontal clash in Impetus?
Yes indeed, their list encourages this aspect, but they still have quite a few options in terms of missile troops and cavalry to change your army up. Without doubt the best list in terms of options available to an Arab commander.
Aber die Fatamiden mit ihren Large Units kommen mir schon böse vor. Die machen mir irgendwie mehr Angst als die Seljuks
I have not played Seljuks, but I do own and play Ayyubid\'s which are very similar and hands down Mamaluks are the best troops in the game IMHO. Their high VBU in shooting devastates Cavalry or any unit for that matter in combo attacks where one unit shoots to get the disorder and the second units fires putting at the very least one automatic wound(disorder twice) effectively knocking off the enemy units Impetus bonus(bye, bye knights). Then even if you do close with the Mamuluks in close combat they are very potent in that as well.
Large units are tough no doubt, but can be outmanoeuvred and cavalry can disengage from them to charge them again.
The Spanish Reconquista is game wise a far superior option IMHO. All armies have access to Large units, light cavalry, medium and heavy cavalry. I say this not because I love the period(which I do of course), but I honestly believe it gives better games as the sides match up so well, but still retain their own very individual flair.
I\'ll be there no matter what the consensus decides, but I\'m trying to voice what I think is best course of action now rather then after the fact and too late to be of any use for anyone.
