This is the start of my Impetus Shimazu Samurai project. Why choose the Shimazu clan? The reason is I really like their background as an underdog clan that is tough as old boots. While they are not a tiny clan or even what I\'d term small, they are also not what I\'d call a super huge clan either and this really appealed to me as I like the smaller or less well known clans more then the really big well known powerful ones. The clan will include allies from the Arima clan which is a small clan they teamed up with to defeat another larger clan. The colours and mons from these clans I also like.
First up are some Ashigaru Arquebusier.I decided for a brown armour for my Ashigaru mostly because I like earth tones and since I\'ll be painting Ashigaru more then Samurai I should use colours I really enjoy the most. Of course the Samurai will wear various coloured armour.
I wanted a nice contrasting colour to the brown, but again opted out on the more common black, white, red and instead went with a light blue which works out very well for me.
Thanks for viewing:)
More to come.

Great work, Christopher...
How many bases are ahead of you... 8o
Really like the way the base tells a story, with the handout of the amunition.

Thank you and I need to do roughly 10 plus a camp and that will have me set at around 300pts or so.

Wow and very inspiring... I need to speed up my work on that project, so we can have a game together then.
Looking forward to see more Inspiration from your side.

wunderbar, habe hier schon lange keine Samurai (oder Ashigaru^^) gesehen. Nur weiter und die Bilder nicht vergessen
Gruß
Zwerch!!!

-
Immer wieder schön anzusehen diese Impetus Diorama-Bases. Alles sehr gut in Szene gesetzt.
-
Great job, very pleasing colors
Reminds me of my Impetus-Samurai-Project which got stuck at the point of cleaning up :(

Absolutly awe inspiring stand.

DIese Pavisen hatten die Musketenschuetzen meines Wissens sogar selbst getragen.

Thank you everyone for the kind comments! :D

The type of manlets were not specific to one class thus different types and shapes were used by all . The fence like one I believe your referring to was primarily but not exclusively used vs Cavalry and if they expected to encounter a great deal then that was a good choice, but if facing large numbers of Ashigaru then one need to prepare vs arrows more then cavalry making a solid manlet more appropriate. It also depended at what was at hand. ;)
Reminds me of my Impetus-Samurai-Project which got stuck at the point of cleaning up :(
:laugh1: ......My sympathies as I well understand how fine the detail was on these making clean up a task indeed.

Outstanding Work Christopher!
Beside it\'s so cool that you choose the Shimazu clan. When we started to plan Samurai here I also wanted to do the Shimazus but one of my mates persuaded me to choose Takeda as he wanted to do Uesugi and is a big fan of the yearly Kawankajima festival... So I went for Takeda - well impersonating the tragic faction of Kagemusha is a great compensation :) But for the Shimazus beeing underdogs - I disagree with that - they may not be so well known in the West as the houses of Hojo, Uesugi, Takeda, Oda and Tokugawa but they were a major clan even before and throughout the period and managed to hold their provinces which were roughly as big as the ones of the Hojos or Takedas for the whole period and even the fact that they sided with the wrong side at Sekigahara did them no big harm except that of coursetheir power declined like all houses in the following Tokugawa period.
It\'s really a pity that you life so far away otherwise your Shimazus would make a spectacular Impetus opponent for my Takedas.
But back to topic again - I bow in reverence before your painting skills
-
Thank you. :)
I disagree with that - they may not be so well known in the West as the
houses of Hojo, Uesugi, Takeda, Oda and Tokugawa but they were a major
clan even before and throughout the period and managed to hold their
provinces which were roughly as big as the ones of the Hojos or Takedas
for the whole period and even the fact that they sided with the wrong
side at Sekigahara did them no big harm except that of coursetheir power
declined like all houses in the following Tokugawa period.
I did say they were not a tiny or small clan. ;) They were indeed a large clan, but not as famous as some big names are probably due to location more then anything I suppose. By underdogs I meant many of the battles they fought in they were frequently(but not always) outnumbered by as much as 2 to 1 or more and still they came out on top thus earning them the phrase \"tough as old boots\" by me.

Totally agreed :D And for sure Shimazus are awesome :) - Fancy a trip to Vienna? (I could make a sightseeing tour for you) ;)
-
Outstanding work, can\'t wait to see more of the Samurais. You are an inspriation for my own Samurai project.
greetings from Austria and please visit the Grey in Vienna...:)
-
Thanks guys, but I think Austria isn\'t in the cards for me this year, but I will be at the Worean Con in September with my Shimazu Samurai. You should join in once they start accepting applications.:)

I really would like to... But as my company broke up last summer and we are struggling to make a comeback in fall I\'m afraid the travelling cashbox is a bit... lets say empty? ;)
-
Hey,
very nice p-log - looking forward to more input ;D.
I especially like your colour-scheme, the brown/light-blue mix looks good. Miniatures from Perry or even WGF?
Best Regards,
Max
-
Thank you. :)
Miniatures from Perry or even WGF?
They are Perry metal miniatures. My whole Samurai collection will be Perry with maybe a couple TAG here and there.

Next base for my Shimazu Impetus army is Samurai charging with katanas. I
painted my Samurai in strong individual colours which is in contrast to
my Ashigaru\'s more neutral uniformed look in order to distinguish them
as the true elites of my army. However, I still wanted them to look like
they belong to the same army and so the shimazu mon(heraldry) remained
on the sashimono\'s(back banners) and Nobori(large Banner) and also in
the same colour which I hope succeeds in tying them together.
Thanks for viewing! :)

Super Bemalung der Samurai und wieder eine tolle Base  , aber über das Farbschema der Sashimonos würde ich mir nochmal Gedanken machen. Historisch korrekt hin oder her, aber mich erinnern sie so an meine Geschirrhandtücher...
-
Brilliant stuff, Christopher...
Toll auch die unterschiedlichen Bekleidungs und Rüstungsfarben. Da passt Alles.

Having seen your paint-job, I will put my Tokugawa-Samurai aside... KUDOS
-
Once again, outstanding work!
-
Thank you folks very much for your support! :thank_you:
@Morty
I hope you mean your setting them aside to paint next. Are you painting them for Impetus? I\'m hoping to get enough people building Samurai armies for Impetus to run a clan based campaign.

Very, VERY nice
Your pics made me search for Samurai related stuff all day long! Thanks :pinch: :D
I hope the urge to buy some Perrys will pass, as I would never be able to paint a whole army of those!
Anyway, do you have a good online scource about Samurai \"heraldry\" and organisation, as I don\'t know a think about them....?!

Great paintjob! I wish I would be able to paint the way you do this.

Thanks guys I appreciate the support! Now get out there and start your Impetus Samurai armies so we can have some clan wars! :D
I hope the urge to buy some Perrys will pass, as I would never be able to paint a whole army of those!
You can do it! It will only cost you a small portion of your sanity, but hey you\'ll have a Samurai army and who can resist that! :tomato: :)

Yes.
Schrurpumpkopf has the right forum which is hands down the best place for Samurai info. The thread he choose within that forum is good, but I think this thread is even better and is what I use:

I\'ll be doing some cavalry at some point and I\'m nervous at how hard it\'s going to be! :help_1:

Well, I am afraid not.. Comparing my humble painting to yours is like putting a Moskvich car aside a Lamborghini..
I have based mine for FoG or equivalent systems when I started with Mr. Greymouse, but he redecided and I concentrated on sth. else..
Anyway, please keep on posting your amazing work, it might be inspiring for others.

That\'s very kind.:blush2: However, I would ask you to reconsider as everyone paints differently and as long as they are painted then that\'s already an accomplishment and good enough already as that\'s more then many can say. I\'m sure they also look better then what credit your giving them. :)
I have based mine for FoG
Oh dear...... :sleeping_1: ......still all is not lost if put two FOG bases together then you can play Impetus or even Hail Caesar if you have enough figures. ;)
I started with Mr. Greymouse, but he redecided and I concentrated on sth. else..
Yep.... Impetus I believe! :D

Thank you very much and I hope it does. :)

@morty - don\'t you dare to use my Impetusambitions as an excuse for neglecting your Samurai - as Axebreaker has already mentioned (and me too when I visited you this week if you remember) Impetus and FOG Armies are combatible: I suggest we settle this one on the Battlefield with the help of our loyal Hatamotos and retainers. Otherwise I must insist that you submit and hand over your army to me :D
@Axebreaker - please keep up the excellent work. As soon as I have finished painting my friends Romans I will contimue with my Takedas and post some more pictures - your\'s are really inspiring!
-
@Greymouse
Looking forward to it! :)
Working on lighting and terrain background and thought I\'d show it using the
Samurai from my previous post.
Thanks for viewing .:-)

Seeing your work always reminds me on the movie: \"Wayne´s World\"... \"We are not worthy\" :D
Thanks a lot Christopher, the link about the Japanese heraldy you have posted in this thread is a real good one!
Although I will have to redo most of my troops, I am afraid ( no rebasing :P )

Thanks guys and good to hear the motivation to do some Samurai! :D

Excellent work on the miniatures, banners and the base

Thank you very much.:)

You\'re welcome, I forgot to mention that I like it much better with the scenic background

Thank you, I really appreciate the feedback. :) In the future I plan on mixing white backgrounds to show detail and colour backgrounds to give fun \"cinematic\" effects.
