I spent the whole past week and a half or so converting my WAB El Cid
Christian Mercenary army to Impetus (very happy with the new look) my
game of choice for Dark Age/Medieval wargaming.
A quick re-cap behind the army concept. It \'s a Christian Mercenary army
with a heavy Moorish influence that finds itself employed by Muslim
Taifa Kings ,but more often then not in the employ of the Christian
kingdom of Aragon between the years 1090(King Pedro) and 1135(Alfonso
I) covering both El Cid\'s period and the early Reconquista under
Alfonso I \"The battler\".
The army so far gives me a hefty 300pts in cavalry which is substantial
in 28mm. but not unusual for Christian Spanish armies of the period.
With that in mind I figure that\'s plenty cavalry for now and I should
probably add some foot slogging support. I think about 100pts or so of
heavy infantry, formed missile support and some skirmishers are in order
to give me a sold base for my army.
Once I have about 400+ points I\'ll start on the Moors either on this thread or a separate one.
My foreseeable future looks to be Samurai, ACW, Spanish Reconquista dominating with some AWI and SCW here and there.
Thanks for viewing! :)

beeindruckende armee!!! wirklich genial... und die basierung von impetus ist doch immer wieder schön anzusehen! tolle arbeit!

Beautifull miniatures and very many of them...
What I am missing is perhaps the Impetus-effekt. Where is the advantege of the big bases, if you don\'t add anything than stones and gras... 8o
I would add some gimmick, some little story from interacting figures, one or two bits of additional scenery, wich gives an ideo of the scene (roadshrine)...
It now looks too plain to me, just like in the old Warhammer-Days: only miniatures oh the base.
Sorry for that long critic: your painting is exceptional good, Christopher...
And I really like the background of your army.

Thanks for Nice words and comments. :)

Ease of movement and I\'m trying to give the impression of the wide open plains or a Savannah that is the common feature of Spain.

The non natural diorama approach isn\'t always suitable and in fact if you notice most(not all) of my bases are very natural as I don\'t like things added that are static. For example buildings, roads, immovable fences, statues are static and so look good for camps, but not IMHO suited for units that are moving. Most of my bases are designed to look natural wherever they stand on the table and is my personal preference.
It now looks too plain to me, just like in the old Warhammer-Days: only miniatures oh the base.
I disagree as the basing was deliberate and like I said intended to give an open Savannah like effect. I actually believe basing is very important and I put quite a lot of thought and consideration into it even if it may not appear so on this army.
Sorry for that long critic: your painting is exceptional good, Christopher...
No problem I\'m comfortable in my hobby and I welcome opinions and questions behind what I do as long as they are conducted in a friendly and constructive manner like you have just done. Feel free to ask more and/or question why. :)
-
Looks great and i really like the bases. :blush2: ( I\'m no big fan of the \"walking diorama/forest/lake/ruins\" stlye of impetus.. but hey, de gustibus non est disputandum)
Anyways...rebasing has to be the most awful task the hobby has to offer, you really showed a good deal of stamina here.
-
@JS
I agree with you as I try to have a combination of nice looking, but natural looking bases that work for me. :)
Oh and it was quite some work to re-base! :pinch_1: However, I am happy I did it. :)

Eine echt tolle Armee. Mir gefallen die Bases übrigens auch sehr gut, wie sie sind.
-
Nice one and really very beautiful toy soldiers!
I kind of like the bases, especially for soldiers in action, more so for cavalry units. I have some scenery on my BI-bases (War of the roses) but mainly for missile troops. I will do some cavalry in the near future, might be a quite open base as well.
They only problem I have with your army, it looks too good. I have a very strong feeling of copying it.....I really love the mix of different styles and types of models, splendid idea and superbly executed!
-
What a view :smiley_emoticons_pirate_shocked:
11 bases of cavalry...that´s indeed a massive force.
And again, in case of cavalry bases: No diorama ! Horses need room, I wouldn´t expect to meet them in the deep woods...or my garage ;)
-
Thank you guys for your support! :) Now start building those Impetus armies! ^^

Actually it\'s 14. :tomato:

Whoa, nice!
-
Yeah, they look massive/impressive 8o great job
Its always nice when you try to use the space on an impetus base to tell a little story. But for me the real thing is that it represents a whole unit, even when there is just a handful of minis and that works for me. So no more single based miniatures on an awful regimental tray.
-
14...of course :blush2_1:
-
Thanks gentlemen for the nice words! :)

Yes indeed those days are in the past for me as well for all my gaming except a few skirmish systems. 8)

Sehr gut, Christopher!
-
Awesome, totally awesome - the paintjob, the basing just everything. The big bases of Impetus look so good when filled with miniatures - i like that much more then when some fancy bits need most of the base and leave just room for 2 knights and 1 squire - that\'s not a unit imo - here you have units gentlemen! :) and the savannahfeeling works incredible well
-
Coole Armee. Wirklich sehr schön! :good3:
-
Thank you for your support gentlemen! :)

Now it\'s on to the infantry as I have enough cavalry completed. I will not do as many heavy infantry as heavy cavalry as the Spanish fought largely mounted, but they did play a role and so I will include some.
The unit is a Spanish spearmen with a Moorish influence like my cavalry. In keeping with the theme of the rest of the army I once again used ap with highlights and hand painted all shields and banners.
I\'ll be at Attriticon in early May hosting a demo with Sir Toby and his lovely Andulsians vs my El Cid force using Impetus rules. Please drop by and say hi or join in!

Thank you Peter and I\'m looking forward to talking to you again. :)

Who is Peter? ;)

Ooops! :blush2: My apologies I\'m absolutely terrible with names and would forget my own if I didn\'t sign it all the time! I mistakenly thought Peter is your name. Fortunately, I rarely forget a face or I would truly be lost....

:smiley_emoticons_pirate2_biggrin: No big deal, Mandy. (I\'m terrible with names, too) ^^ It\'s \"Patrick\". At least the first letter was right, not so bad after all. :D Let\'s see if you remember it in Ulm. :cool_1:

Next up some more Spanish spearmen with my game with Sir Toby.
The flag is a bit bigger on this then the other one to show it\'s a
command base and I added a Cantador(Bard) to inspire the men to bolster
their spirits.
Thanks for viewing! :)

super duper tolle Sache!! I am impressed!!
-
Really great! I like them a lot!
-
Very, very impressive Christopher. My compliments for this great addition to an already fantastic army! Yet I fear the Cantador has to have a strong voice, as I think it will get rather loud when my Cavalry charges ^^ I\'m so much looking forward to this game....
-
Thank you guys! Very, very kind! :)
@Tobias
He has a bull horn under his cloak as a precaution. ^^

I finished these a few days ago, but I haven\'t had time to publish them.
They are some Spanish skirmishers for my El Cid Impetus army. I painted
them in slightly less flashy colours(mostly browns and creams) to
represent their lower peasant status.
I just recently had a game with Sir Toby (http://tobispaintpot.blogspot.de/)
vs his lovely Andalusians at Attriticon , but sadly my pictures came out so badly they
truly are not worth publishing and I\'m really quite disappointed about
that! ;( I hope Sir Toby had more success with his pics when he finds time to publish them. If anyone managed some decent pics I\'d be very grateful if they published some. The
event in Ulm was great and I really enjoyed putting on the Impetus demo
with Sir Toby who was a real gent! The people there were very kind!
