Dreistheit siegt.

Forgefathers-Team

It all began with a deal, as is common with the Forge Fathers. They would be allowed to play in the league in exchange for certain mining rights and technical know-how. These days, after years of play and several league victories, it is hard to imagine the leagues without the doughty presence of the father teams, first among whom are the stalwart players of the Midgard Delvers.

The Forge Fathers aren’t the most demonstrative race, though DreadBall has rapidly built a fanatical following in the mining fields of their domains. Forge Fathers are the only race allowed in these teams, and while recruiting can be slow (like most things with these folk), there always seem to be more available when you need them.

The Forge Father team is one of big, slow hitters, and Roberto Cirillo and Mike McVey worked closely together to get a uniformed look across the models whilst still differentiating the various player types.

Veer-myn Team

Team Badges by Curis Ninjabread

How can Veer-myn play in the DreadBall leagues? What about Orx and Forge Fathers? Aren’t they the enemy? Is this safe? These were the sort of questions that greeted the earliest non-human teams when they took to the pitch for the first time back in The Thudweiser Cup XXXV. Several explanations have been offered in official press releases, scandal sheets and on serious newsfeeds.

Designing the Veer-myn team once again came down to Mike McVey and Roberto Cirillo, who once again produced this stunning artwork

To take the Veer-myn as an example, some folk hold the view that these are not real rat-men at all, but vat-bred stand-ins who simply look similar; others suggest robots could be the answer, carefully dressed up with sythnthiskin; clones are another possibility. Rex Roth from DNN ran a series of articles supposedly uncovering a capture and breed programme, but that has been largely debunked as the result of an overactive journalistic imagination.

These days the average DreadBall fan simply doesn’t care. The non-humans add so much spectacle and excitement to the game that any cultural foibles are seen as just part of the showbiz atmosphere and razzmatazz that accompanies the big games. Some have even gone so far as to suggest that DreadBall should
be officially adopted as the means to resolve disputes instead of fighting wars!

Ali McVey again took up the mantle of painting one of these pieces for us

The Veer-myn team is mostly comprised of fast, nimble Strikers. Using them requires a degree of tactical skill – whilst adept at dodging out of the way they are simply not that great at scoring, so you’ll be relying on having as many attempts on goal as you can muster!

The Veer-myn team are now unlocked on the Kickstarter page.

Zzor

Z’zor are still a relatively new concept on the DreadBall Kickstarter and we had a few different bits of art done to see what they’d look like. Since we’re currently hunting them down as our $265,000 stretch goal, we thought we’d explore a little bit more about them.

“Wild” Z’zor are ruthless and mindlessly violent – with the Z’zor it is kill or be killed. Fortunately the sport was’t stupid enough to put DreadBall stars in that much danger, instead employing the use of genetically modified, mind-controlled drones specially bred to suit DreadBall play… Well, that’s how the story goes.

Z’zor Drones are multi-limbed and unpredictable, with a naturally hardened exoskeleton preventing the need for DreadBall armour. Drones that take up the Striker role have scoop-like appendages to catch and throw the ball whilst Guards retain the size of some of the more “natural” creatures back on the Z’zor homeworlds, and nearly all of their temperament. Despite advancements in mind-control it is not uncommon for a Z’zor Guard to see red and charge an opposing player, the result of which is normally deep gashes, slashed armour and crushed limbs.

Despite this the Z’zor are great for entertainment purposes and hence these insectoid teams are allowed to continue playing. Between the alien “ZZZ-ZZZ” the Z’zor emit as they pass the ball and their sudden outbursts of violent play, Z’zor are portrayed as the natural enemy – skeptics claim primarily as a form of propaganda for the war – and stadiums are consistently sold-out whenever there is a team playing.

$265,000 – The Z’zor, Season 2 Insectoid Team

The Z’zor team are our next stretch goal and if we hit it we will produce a team for this furious insectoid race. If we hit this goal we will add 1 Z’zor Player to Jack, add 2 Z’zor Players to Striker and add the Z’zor team to our list of our Season 2 Buy One Get One Free Teams!

We’ve hooked up with the great guys at Penny Arcade to create one very special player for the DreadBall Kickstarter – the officially licensed Jonathan “Gabe” Gabriel MVP!

When Jonathan “Gabe” Gabriel died on the pitch, smashed into a uniform paste by the legendary Buzzkill, it was assumed to be the end of his career. When a jockstrap rich in genetic material was discovered, he became the first crowdfunded resurrection by cloning.

The ultimate test of skill and tactics for any major-league coach, the colossal stadiums of Ultimate DreadBall reverberates with the screams and cheers of millions of fans. Hulking mechs and monstrous aliens are thrown onto the huge pitches to play ball and teams from all over the galaxy clamour to compete in the hope of winning the competition’s considerable prize.

Wow – that is Veer-myn alternate sculpts and prone marker locked in! Great work guys!
