A new project centred around the wars of Pyrrhus of Epirus which first attracted my interest after a friend introduced me to his exploits a long while back and was rekindled when Keith from Aventine miniatures started producing incredible figures for the period. :love: I knew eventually I would have to start painting some of these up and now I have!
It will start with me collecting the Pyrrhic army and my friend Mike the Republican Romans. We have no deadlines as of yet so it\'s a painters project until it develops more.
I\'m starting it with my impression of the Royal Guard infantry pike. The idea came to me when going through the new Osprey Successor book
and I saw the Royal Guard in Purple helms which I quite liked and decided I would do unit in a purple theme. The armour is fuchsia which is a mix of pink and purple and so goes with the helm and shield I think. I kept plums and such all white to give a nice contrast to the purple. Except for the clothes I kept them uniform in appearance as I feel it gives them a more elite feel. I should also add the front rankers are deliberately more elaborate as they had the best
gear in every formation.
The army will be based for both Impetus and Hail Caesar.
Sorry about so many pics as I wasn\'t sure which to put in.
Thanks for viewing! :)

I don\'t like purple and even less that much purple... but I have to admit that it looks impressive and is a fine paint job with a first class basing. :)

Very impressive unit! :thumbup: The purple reminds me of Slaanesh Space Marines, though. ;)
-
I\'d call the colour scheme \'bold\', but it is very well executed. I agree with Kluchert, a metal colour on parts of the helmet would give the miniatures a more military note. Still, I like them. :)

Thanks guys! :)
@Desert Fox
Interesting to know you like the period as well.
@Bil
You will see more purple and lots of other colours too so brace yourself! :tomato:
@Thomas and Mandulis
I went for a highly uniformed appearance in everything except the clothes as I wanted to project an elite disciplined formation and hence the all one colour helmets and shields and such. When I paint levy and allied troops I\'ll be less uniformed and so will have some base armour showing on helmets and such. :)
@Strand
Perhaps Slaanesh was a fan of Pyrrhus. :P

Your unit looks so fantastic. I like the purple scheme very much. The more pics the better. :dance3:
So now I have to do some of my Romans, too.

Thank you Mike and yes you do! :D

Klasse Figuren und ziemlich mutig… Ich würde auch, wie schon angeregt ein paar Metallteile oder Verzierungen einbauen. Bin auf weitere Bilder gespannt.
-
Thank you Frank. :) As I do more formations then the helmets and everything will be less uniformed with metal showing. The all one colour is deliberate on the guard to help set them apart from other formations as the true elites.
As usual I cannot say when I\'ll do the next unit as I tend to bounce around my projects like a rabbit on speed! :blush2:

Hi,
ich finde diese Truppe einfach grossartig. Kann Axebreakers Intentionen auch gut nachvollziehen. Herausragend ist m.E. auch die Basengestaltung - insbesondere von der Seite sieht das einfach genial aus. Bin gespannt, was noch kommt....
cheers

I\'ll for sure come back to this project, but I just can\'t say when as I\'m mood painter. :blush2:

The unit looks amazing. Choice of colours might be a matter of taste, but I think for a elite unit the royal purple is an excellent one. Contrast and depths of the miniatures is also outstanding.The wonderful shield designs (decals or painted by hand?) add the special something and I also like your super thin Sarissai.
You could make me very happy if you would paint some War Elephants in this scale. ;) I hope they are next on the army list.
-
Thank you Dareios. :) Yes, I knew the bold purple theme was going get some reactions both positive and negative which is to be expected and something I factored in and intended in some ways. I\'ve had comments ranging from they really look like crack royal guard to purple smurfs! :laugh1: The shields are transfers from the great LBM and the pikes are from North Star.
I will for sure do a War Elephant or two at some point. ;) How could I resist that! :)

This army looks so awesome
Thank you! :)
Gripping Beast figures?
No they are not Gripping Beast. They are from the truly superb Aventine miniatures Pyrrhic range :love: .

They really look good - must have a look if they have some suitable minis to add to my Ptolemaics ;)
