Hello Everyone! :D This is my new thread I\'m starting for The American War Of Independence.It\'s for a project that Robert E. Lee,Sven and myself have started.I\'ll be collecting the Americans and Sven will help paint up a few as you may have seen already in a different thread.Both Robert and Sven plan on doing the British.Robert also has started a thread with the British.
First up is the 1st Virgina militia regiment.We plan on fighting Guilford Courthouse and the day was described as wet and cool.With this in mind I decided to make my bases look \"wet\" with some standing pools of water.The unit is just beginning to panic and some of the men are starting to run.Hey,they are militia after all. ;) Give me liberty or give me death!Freedom!
Don\'t Tread on me:

This is for you Angrist,a view from the rear of the regiment .:)

I hope this is fun for some of you. :D
-
very nice!
have u painted the banner yourself or is it a decal?
if youve painted it yourself.. do you like metallica? :D
-
Thank you! :D
I painted the banner myself.The banner with the rattlesnake is the traditional symbol of defiance used by the americans from the very beginning of the war.I\'ve always really liked the slogen Don\'t Tread On Me and this was also very popular at the time as well. ;)
Metallica is not my favorite,but I do like some of their music. :beer:
-
Awesome looking unit! :thumbup:
I really like how you captured the beginning panic and the wet and cool day with your basing! Really well done!!!
-
Hallo Chris,
sehen echt super aus! Da kann ich mit meinem Malstil nicht mithalten, was für ein Glück gehen meine als erstes Hopp :D :whistling: !
Sven
-
They look great! thumbs up! :)
-
Fehlt nur noch M.Gibson ;) .....................Super schön! :D
Gratuliere! :D
-
Stunning, simply stunning. The banner is a beauty too, even though it also remainds me of metallicas black album :thumbsup: .
-
Great stuff again, Axebreaker. The guy fleeing the battle is a great touch. Will he not give you trouble with the position of the rest of your army, or will there be no further ranks behind them?
-
This unit look really great! I love the bright color and the flag. :thumbsup: Are they Perrys ?
-
Great looking unit! Very inspiring :D
-
Great looking unit! Very inspiring :D
Ditto!
-
Great miniatures! :thumbsup:
I like the miniature of a founder of an United States Army tradition: Running away :D
-
@Everyone
Thank you very much for the compliments! :pump: :thumbsup:
@Robert
Thank you. :D I just looked up the Metallica\'s black albumn cover and now I see your and Vingthor\'s point.That snake symbol was a common symbol for flags during the war,and that was where I got my idea.I wasn\'t aware Metallica had used it,but it\'s a cool symbol and I understand why they used it to advocate defiance and resistence. :beer:
@Phobos
Thank you. :D It\'s funny you should mention that,but the American General Greene at Guilford Courthouse deployed his army with the full understanding that the militia would not stand for long.He used a plan devolped by Daniel Morgan in which he deployed his battle lines in 3 waves one behind the other.His intention was that they flee through each others lines.He spaced them out so they would not disrupt the other line.He used militia in the first 2 lines and had his regulars in the last.He asked his militia to fire at least 2 shots before breaking.For the most part they performed very well in this battle.In the end the British did manage to win,but they paid such a heavy toll in casualities that one member of parliment remarked that anymore victories like this will be the end of the British empire! :blackeye:
@Erestor90
Thank you. :D The miniatures are a mix between Perry and Foundry,although you can say they are all Perry because they did the AWI line for Foundry before starting on their own. ;)
-
@Mad Mo
I beg to differ.I am an American and know my history well.America has a proud tradition of standing and fighting.The American Civil War is loaded with stand up brawls.The alamo, Bastogne,New Orleans 1812,Midway,Guadalcanal,just about all the pacific island battles,Etc.I\'m a veteren of the first gulf war and we didn\'t run from anything.(tanks)
In the AWI of independence the Americans were going up against the best equiped and best trained army in the world at the time.Their commanders were almost all veterens from the French and Indian war and were very good to boot.Of course the militia didn\'t stand up to the British army very well,but we musn\'t forget Bunker Hill.They stood and were winning until they ran out ammo and had no bayonets to resist the British anymore.On the other hand the American regulars held their own for the most part.As their training and equipment improved,so did their ability to stand.All in all given the quality of the troops and commanders of the British army the Americans showed great resolve and did win their independence.If they ran all the time,we would still have a King/Queen and not a president.
-
Good painting, dynamic poses and combination. I like them.

Good looking miniatures and a small interesting fact! I am pleased! :) Thank you, Axebreaker.
-
Impressively done! Like the way you blended in the casualities & runaways. And your painting absolutely does justice to the Perries\' great miniatures. Looking forward to the next units.
-
Great job,I like the colours you used.Nice idea with the waterpools and the flag is cool,too :thumbup:
-
@Antipater
Thank you! 8o I\'m looking forward to your next units as well! :D
@Tellus
Thank you! :D Let me know if I made any more spelling errors. :lol: As you can see,that\'s not my strong point.I print to fast and forget to proof. :oops:

Hello everyone!
The Virgina Rifles are my new addition to this thread.These Perry Riflemen are perhaps my favorite of their entire range. :thumbsup: I hope I managed to do these wonderful mini\'s some justice. :rolleyes: The base size and type of troop allowed me to add a bit more to the bases and was alot of fun. :) I also added a little bit of an american indian flavour here and there to belts,haversacks and bands as they often did.
Next up is another militia unit and a brigade commander. :)

Excellently done! I think you\'ve captured the motion of these figs very well. The massive rocks are a nice addition, too. :thumbup:
-
Thank you guys,I appreciate the compliments. :D
@Antipater
I\'m looking forward to seeing more of your AWI stuff. 8) By the way,will you be going to TTU this June?If you do,please bring some of your AWI stuff along. :)
-
Super! :thumbsup: :thumbsup:
-
Ty! :D
Your buildings by the way are absolutely superb and a huge inspiration! :neo:
-
@Axebreaker, I\'ll have to see if it\'s possible. Will you stage a participation game of BG there?
-
@Antipater
Yes,we have that in mind.We wanted to do Guilford Courthouse,but we have seen that this is beyond us in terms of miniatures at the moment.We have opted instead to play Bunker Hill (minus the town)and maybe Hobkirks Hill if the mood takes us. ;)
It\'s an informal affair in regards to absolute correct units and such for obvious reasons.As far as requirments for miniatures is they must at least be AWI period and for now that is all. :)
The object is to present a nice board(not spactacular)and introduce as many people as possible to this system.We encourage people to join in and play.It\'s also a chance for us to get to know the rules better,but the first and foremost goal is to play and have a good time. :D
You and your very nice mini\'s are welcome to join us! :thumbsup:

Hello everyone,
Here is my latest installment the 2nd Virgina Militia.The standard was similar to the one used at Bunker Hill,but I changed the color for my militia unit to use.I envisioned them adopting the banner,because they wish to emulate the performance of the troops at Bunker Hill.
They came out a bit bright,but hopefully they still pass the test. :)

Great paintjob! And they idea with the casualties at the back is very nice, too. It makes the unit more vivid. :)
-
Habe sie schon am Wochenende gesehen, sind echt der Hammer. Christopher hat ja nicht umsonst den Preis für die Bestpainted Army gewonnen!
Sven
-
Too bright? Whatcha talkin\' \'bout, Willis? That is (boringly, once again :D :P Do something ugly for a change! ) an amazing bunch of miniatures! You surely are the master of the earth colour palette.
-
Very good!
Is there more to come) 8o
-
Oh sweet! A+ Eyecandy really.
I was never interested in the conflicts fought on the american continent (even tho I was living and quebec and used to celebrate \"Dollair\" on the \"pleins d\'abraham\" with the thin beer they have over there...
-
Hey Christopher, your miniatures are great, as always. We really have to meet, so I can play with or against your miniatures :)
-
-
Uh,really fantastic!
We want more!!!
-
Sehr schön!
-
Once more, I got really excited about your miniatures. Love the idea of mixed dresses, especially the Continentals\' colourful uniform gives a nice highlight.
Keep up the amazing brushwork! :herz:
-
@Everyone
Thank you for the kind words. :D
@Mad Mo
Yes, I have a mounted commander to post and I\'m working on a 6pdr. cannon. :bomb:
@Iameth
Of course,but probably not AWI as I need to paint a lot more to field a real force..HYW is more likely ,but not to big a battle.Maybe,September or October if that would work for you. :) BTW do you collect AWI?If so,we are planning a game at Tactica in Febuary.(Sven,Robert,and myself)
@Monty
There is no set size,but rather recommendations from the author.This is the sizes I used (width x length in mm)
C in C (2 -4 figures) -70 x 60
Divisional General(2 figures) -54 x 50
Brigade Commander(1 Figure) -30 x 50
Skirmishers(elite/line 2 man) - 40 x 30/50(depends on if the are lying down,but I prefer 40 x 50 for the space)
Skirmishers(non elite/3 Figures-60 x 30/50
Infantry (4 man) -36 x 50
Infantry(6 man) -54 x 50
Cavalry (2 man) -40 x 50
Cavalry (3 man) -60 x 50
Artillery (per model gun & crew) -60 x70
Super light gun -54 x50
@Antipater
Too bad you couldn\'t make TTU,but maybe Tactica if you can for some BG AWI. :)
-
sehr sehr schön! :thumbsup:

Hello everyone,
I\'m continuing on with my American army at Guilford Courthouse with the wet conditions of the morning of the battle.
Here is Stevens the commander of Virgina Militia ready to crush the British or at least try and keep his men from running away! :roflmao:
(http://i400.photobucket.com/albums/pp84/khraid/AWI/P1040189-1.jpg)
(http://i400.photobucket.com/albums/pp84/khraid/AWI/P1040190-1.jpg)
This is Finley\'s 6pdr. Battery/Cannon.In this scene Finley decided he wished to show up in his finest military uniform as he didn\'t want to make a bad impression on the British! :P His men however,are far more practical. ;)

-
super! genial! beeindruckend :herz: :thankyou:
-
Great work. As allways it´s worth to take a look at this thread.
-
You can really feel the rain and the muddy ground. Great bases. :thumbup: :thumbup:
-
Thank you very much Gentlemen!Your kind words help keep a modeler inspired! :D
-
Suuuper!! Das Modell ist tol und die Besatzung exzellent bemalt. Allerdings frage ich mich, warum die Räder der Kanone noch so sauber sind ;)
-
@Tankred
The wheels,the men, and the cannon itself where given a fresh cleaning by the crew as they are an extremely tidy bunch of guys and after the fight with the British they have a fashion exhibition for the latest Cannon magazine!It just wouldn\'t do to have a speck of unsightly mud on the wheels now would it! :P
Seriously though,I started the army with clean painting and to have some clean and others dirty wouldn\'t look very cohesive.I sacrificed some realism in this regard to keep the army tied together. ;)
I\'m thinking of doing a Napoleonic army in a dirty and muddied appearance some day as great coats really are nice to do that with. 8) Maybe a crusader army with a rougher look is also a possibility.When doing modern armies I like my vehicles pretty beat up and dirty.I did this with FOW btw. However,as you pointed out I normally prefer my miniatures painted clean. ;)
Still,thanks for the question as I always welcome them. :D
-
Love the canon :thumbsup:
-
That\'s a fantastic base design and a nice paint job :)
I really like the chosen colours.
Greetings
-
Oh, how did I miss those? Love your painting skills once again. Tidy Americans just rule! :D

@Everyone
Thanks guys! :D
Tidy Americans just rule!
Hopefully they will on the battlefield as well. :P

In keeping with our Bunker Hill project for Tactica I\'ve decided to build some terrain and start some civilians that are period specific.First up is this meeting house that I always liked from Giles blog and decided to build it myself.The mayor and a two wheeled tumbrel are Perry miniatures.The Perry AWI civilians are just wonderful(I know,all their stuff is (http://generaldebrigade.greatboard.com/images/smiles/icon_wink.gif) ) :love: and I\'ve now had a chance to paint up a few.
I imagine this to be the town mayor greeting a porter transporting a tumbrel full with ammo and supplies up to the local militia. :)

Just finished up my Bunker Hill redoubt for TACTICA in February where Robert,Sven and myself will be putting on a demo of The Battle of Bunker Hill.The redoubt was quite simple and I reflected this in the construction.I\'m not even sure they reinforced the dirt walls with planking,but I took some liberties and decided to go ahead and add it.I placed some of my mini\'s inside to give a sense of proportion and I think it will work fine. Also in the photo is one of the three fletches I made as well.The background is for color only as I\'m trying to show the redoubt.:)

Great work Christopher! Very inspiring. After seeing all this fantastic AWI miniatures and scenery on your blog, and on Antipaters Blog, I go now for my own US Army. :)
I cannot resist anymore.
-
sehr schönes werk!
-
One Question please: How do your troops get the cannon inside (and outside the redoubt)? :huh:
Beautiful work anyway!
-
@Everyone
Thank you very much for the support. :D
@Hindu
That\'s a fair question. :) Thick Planks could be laid to either side of the redoubt to form a ramp whereby the cannon was hauled over,that could later be retracted when the enemy approached.Another simpler way, was simply to move the artillery piece in before the redoubt was completely sealed and finished. ;)

Here are some causality figures and markers that I\'m using for British Grenadier.
First up is the causality figures that rotate as causalities are taken
and removed after a complete rotation.In British Grenadier most units
are 4 models to a base(some have 6)and so I decided on a triangle
numbered 1 to 3 as the most practical.
The stones are used to mark a
units disruption level that goes from 1 to 3 and is a special feature
of British Grenadier that isn\'t used in the other GdB rules and really
helps add the feel to the period. :toocool: I\'ve started off with 6 pieces per
level.
When I start the British I\'ll do the same thing.

Incidentally just admired them on your blog. Simply put, casualty markers are a must-have for every self-respecting wargamer with some sense for aesthetics (if that\'s the right term in conjunction with dead people). Anyway, cool. :thumbup:

Sure,the term is fine and well understood within the context it was given. :) I agree.that markers add that little extra to a battlefield to help give more atmosphere. :thumbup:

I decided our Bunker Hill demo needed a church on the battlefield.The reason is in many depictions of this engagement one is often seen in the distance.
So I reached for my foam card and other materials and got to work.Here is the end result of my efforts at creating an American colonial church.It\'s not based on a real church,but on ideas from various other ones I\'ve studied.
I hope some of you think it captures the period. :)

Thanks gentlemen! :D
Kann man das Dach abnehmen?
Not these ones Tom.I did this with several of my Old West buildings as I felt this would come into play more often as it\'s a skirmish game,but BG AWI is a unit based game and I felt this isn\'t needed,therefore I left them closed for practical reasons(sturdier). ;)

Continuing on with my AWI story. :) This is a 4 wheeled ammo cart being moved along past some field workers somewhere in North Carolina 1781.This piece will also be seen at TACTICA along with the rest of the mini\'s seen on this thread.I hope to meet a lot of you in person that as of now I\'ve only been able to write to on this forum. :D

Just finished General Greene who will be acting as General Putnam for the Bunker Hill scenario at Tactica.
After some thought I decided General Greene would have made some
excellent use of scouts as this really helped him to stay a step ahead
of the British.This gave me an idea to use the mounted riflemen from
Perry and General Greene together as if they were advising him as to
the location of various British forces.It also gave me the excuse I
needed to include these wonderful mini\'s from Perry that normally are difficult to
find a place for! :D

\"Cough\"\"cough\" as he blows the dust of a this old thread.
This unit has been sitting on my desk well over half done for quite
along time and I felt I should finish them up and set them in my cabinet
where they belong and so I did.
This is my impression of the 1st North Carolina Militia although they
actually probably looked a bit more shabby then this as I perhaps have
too many uniformed soldiers in the line and their clothes are in
relatively good shape and not ragged which they likely were.
Information on these units is pretty sketchy to say the least and so
I\'ll just give a general background. Excepting one North Carolina
militia which held it\'s ground at Camden all the rest ran away with many
not even firing a shot in anger and so General Greene was hoping to get
a bit more from them at Guilford Courthouse and he did. They actually
managed some sniping and even a volley which did inflict casualties on
the British before throwing down their equipment and running. Since
Greene really didn\'t expect more from them and they did inflict some
damage he was content if not happy with their performance.
Thanks for viewing. :)

Thank you Frank! :D Yes, it\'s been along time indeed I\'ve been working on this project and I don\'t think I\'ll ever stop doing it. It\'s a difficult period to paint and so I doubt I\'ll do a lot of units at one time, but rather in spurts. I plan on doing a continental unit next for this and I\'m curious how it will turn out. :)

It would be nice folks to get all players interested in this period and come together somewhere and put on a big demo game.
