I was thinking what performance by an Actor/Actress in the movies did the best in portraying a historical figure in history.

For me it was close between Alec Guinness as Charles the I in Cromwell(very inaccurate movie, but great acting)and Rod Steiger as Napoleon in the masterpiece Waterloo.I had to go with Rod Steigar. He was so good that when I think of Napoleon it\'s him who comes to mind and I just can\'t see anyone other then him portraying him. Also,a special mention goes to Christopher Plummer as Wellington as I also do not believe he was surpassed in this role either by another actor.

Other contenders were-

George C. Scott-Patton
Richard Harris-Cromwell

So,What is yours? :)

somebody once said,  there are only movies about King George the 3rd, because some Actors pushed the Studios to make it, so that they can play a role to get an Oscar

My favourites

Martin Sheen as Robert E. Lee (Gettysburg) (I Could maybe start to write down 70% of the cast of gettysburg ;) )
Kenneth Brannagh as Henry V (Henry V)

Martin Sheen wasn\'t bad as Lee,but the best was Tom Berger as Longstreet in my view in regards to this film. ;)

Gettysburg was boooring. :( After 25 minutes or so I was not able to say which bearded fellow was who. They looked all the same and the fake beards were crap.

Now back to topic.

Kenneth Williams as Caesar in Carry on Cleo is my favourite Roman :)

But I can give you a second vote on Scotts Patton. He did not accept the Oscar for that one.

It helps to be a fan of the period(which I am) and then you can over look the beards as that\'s not really important. ;) However,in terms of a very good American civil war movie then that would be \"Glory\".

Okay. Got to admit that the ACW has a backseat in my trailer, which I have left along the way. ;)

What do you  dislike about the beards, i think they are ok.
Maybe they seem to be a little bit thick or sth, but these are beards that grew since beards start to grow, not such modern beards, which are cut, chanced, and whatever, all day long ;)

and at least not everything was fake
George Lazenby insisted that he have a real beard instead of a fake one for his role as Brig. Gen. J. Johnston Pettigrew in the film. So his scene was not shot until he had grown a full beard.

And in the end,
Gettysburg and Gods and Generals, will, forever, own the first and second place, for a movie, where  you see 3 pages of Beard artist, stylist, beard manager, beard support etc,
it was just hillarious seeing theses credits.
