This is a Trojan army I will be playing at next summers Tabletops United 5 am 3+4. Juli 2010 in München/Dachau (http://index.php?page=Thread&threadID=3108)
When completed,the army will be quite large with around 11 Chariots and 140+infantry miniatures.To accomplish this I decided on using Army Painter(strong tone),because my normal painting method makes this impractical to try. :rolleyes:
The army is designed right around the Trojan period itself and according to many historians and Homer himself this was a time of transition from early tactics and equipment and later more updated equipment and tactics.With this in mind,my army will have a mix of early and late equipment.For me this is very nice,as I can model and paint both periods. :D
I\'ve never been a fan of light toned bases for my miniatures and almost always have used a dark brown as I really like the contrast.However,since I\'m fielding Trojans a dark brown base simply won\'t do.I did some internet surfing on dry climate terrain and hit upon a reddish brown that I quite liked.I decided to base my army on this as it fulfills my desire to not have to light a base,but still give that arid/dry feel to it.To further emphasize this I went with sparse dried grass.
I also went for very wide based unit for both looks and anticipation of things to come in WAB2. ;)
First up is a unit of combined Spearmen/Archers.Many depictions show the early Trojan spearmen to have very long spears and I decided to reflect this in spears that border on pikes(80mm),but in games terms act as a thrusting spear.Plus.I just like how it looks. :P
After giving a base color(lighter then normal)to each area.I then brushed on army painter.The only exception is the shield faces in which I hand painted these.
I gave a quick highlight to the speartips and clothes.I did not highlight the flesh,wood,or bone.I also did not black line or paint in the eyes.By choosing to avoid most highlights,black lining etc. I greatly speeded up the process,because if I did do all the normal steps then it defeats the whole purpose of using army painter. ;)
So,for time spent vs results then I must say I\'m quite pleased. :D

(http://i400.photobucket.com/albums/pp84/khraid/Trojans/P1040629.jpg)
Here are some close ups of the spearmen.I went with a slightly darker skin tone as this reflects their Mediterranean background.Also,the shield rims were done with army painter applied to include the boss.The cow patterns on the shields were hand painted and received no army painter.I also tried to give the appearance of hairlike cowhide in which I hope I succeeded.The reason is I wanted this part of the model to look very nice as I think this is a hallmark of a Trojan army and probably the main reason I collected Trojans in the first place and so I didn\'t take any short cuts with this part of the model. :)

They really look good! I experimented with armypainter once and wass quite disappointed with the results - so I\'m very impressed by your results :thumbup:
-
Impressive results Chris :thumbsup: . Could you make some pictures with more detail? Because in the moment it’s quite hard to recognise the flesh, or more precisely the effect of the army painter on it.
-
Christopher, those are awesome! I love them - I didn\'t now that you can do such lovely things with the ArmyPainter. And these shields are great, I am so happy that I got the chance to see them live ^^
-
das wurde mit army painter gemacht? ist ja hardcore!!!! gibts da anleitungen zu?!
-
kaum zu glauben! sehr sehr schön!

@Everyone
Thank you for the kind words and support! :D
@Robert
I don\'t plan on taking anymore pictures of this unit,but my next unit will be some skirmishers.They will not have shields,so this will give you a better look at the flesh and I\'ll try and get a closer look. :) Bear in mind,I don\'t like photo\'s to close up as that distorts images and doesn\'t present them in the fashion they will look on the table or even up close up in person. ;)
@Sharku
I started with a white undercoat.I normally use black,but with army painter I recommend using lighter tones like white or light gray so as not to darken your base colors.
You need only use a base color for each part in colors a bit lighter then you normally would.
When finished painting in the base colors then brush on army painter using a light coat.Notice that I said brush it on and not dip it.Be careful not to let it pool up in places and continue to brush until you have a light even coat.It will pool in some areas,but careful use of the brush will limit it.
At this point your finished,but you can add some highlights if you wish.I recommend doing so with anything white.I only added highlights to the clothes and spear tips by re applying the base color to the raised areas to clean it up some.
Now apply a coat of matt varnish to remove the shine.I use GW satin(pure) as it doesn\'t dull the model down to much,but still removes the shine and offers a nice protection.However,careful when using it and only spray lightly and from a distance or you will in fact give it a shine. ;)
Please remember the cow hide patterns are not army painter(dip) and are hand painted.I hope this helped. :)

Fantastisch...wunderschöne Figuren und ein schönes Thema. :thumbup:

Tolle Einheit!
Will be difficult to place them in close combat with the spears pointing forward.
-
-
@Everyone
Thank you!
@Diomedes
Will be difficult to place them in close combat with the spears pointing forward.
Yes,I thought of that and when the unit is in actual combat I\'ll just turn it around and if photo\'s are being taken,then I\'ll carefully slot the spears between the other units models.

Total cool!
-
Sehr gelungen. Da schließe ich mich an. Die Schilde sind einfach klasse.
-
Her mit den Plänklern :D
Ich freu´ mich schon auf die Streitwagen!
-
@Everyone
Thank you very much gentlemen,your comments help keep a fellow gamer on course. :D
@Frank Bauer
Indeed you are correct Frank in that army painter offers a chance to paint large armies in a reasonable time and to a decent standard. ;)
@Mad Mö
Chariots will be a bit later as I first want to do some more infantry to get some more practice in.I still haven\'t quite figured out how much army painter to use to get the best results.I want to be comfortable with the process before doing chariots as they will naturally be the focal point of the army. :)
Cheers
Christopher

BTW take thrusting spears for the chariots, no doubt about it :)
For the Greater Impact! ;)

@Leongegrande
Not only that Olaf,but the thrusting spear looks better! :thumbup: However,I did want a mix of early and later Trojan equipment to more reflect the period I choose for the Trojans and so I plan on having one with and one without.
I was thinking the General and his unit of chariots would be armed with thrusting spears to symbolize the \"old guard\" who are set in their ways and a hero leading another chariot unit with the lighter equipment to represent the young nobles trying out the latest war gear. ;)

P.S.My agents will slip you an extra gold nugget for your useful information. :ninja:

Here is my latest addition of some chariot runners and slingers.No fancy shields with these guys.Here you can see army painter as is without any fancy work to hide behind.I\'m not completely happy as I\'m still learning to use army painter and I haven\'t quite got the mix right just yet,but it\'s coming along.The nice thing is these guys painted up quick even adding a couple highlights and that in itself is a motivating factor. :sm_pirate_smile:

All right, very nice! AP gives a very smooth finish. You could probably use GW washes with the same results and less drying time, especially if you paint over the layer of shadows later on?
-
All right, very nice! AP gives a very smooth finish.
Ty Tom, :) but you should know I touched up the flesh real quick after applying the army painter using the base color again. ;) I still need to work on getting the army painter into the folds and crevices more effectively.I think its a bit to less at the moment,but to much will also darken it more then I want.I just need to keep practicing.
A fun unit is up next with the Sea People who are quite colorful and so I\'m interested if I will get it right.
-
Good God, that\'s quite a bunch. AP really seems to work with Mediterranean flesh tones, and the coloured clothing adds nice highlights to the unit. :thumbup:
Looking forward to your interpretation of the Sea People.
-
Ty guys,I appreciate it. :sm_pirate_smile:

Here is my latest edition in the form a unit of allied Lukka Pirates(Sea Peoples) to support my Trojans.These guys were fun to paint up and I quite like the colorful nature of the unit.I tried adding a bit more army painter then last time to help raise the detail and added a few quick highlights to further define areas.I\'m happy with skin tones here more then the other units. :) Again,most of the shield work is hand painted except the bronze studs with have army painter applied.
Next up are....Chariots!The staple highlight units of the period in question.I\'m looking forward to seeing how they turn out. :)

Here is my new addition with the King and his retinue.He is wearing a scale armored suite that goes to his knees and is
carrying a sword to make him stand out further.His retinue of
charioteers are armored in the older fashion of Dendra panoply armored and thrusting spears because the king favors the jousting style of
combat.
I continued using army painter with quick highlights except the box cab where I did the cow hide pattern by hand.The white steeds I also did in a gray and white scheme as army painter just didn\'t work on that much white.
One more chariot unit and infantry unit and I\'ll be ready for TTU! :sm_pirate_biggrin:

Nice looking paint job, good luck for TTU :thumbup: .
-
Very well done again, they look the part. :thumbup:
Used the \'Nestor\' chap as an army general myself - admittedly, he\'s the only charioteer so far as painting horses and fiddly chariots drives me crazy. :wacko:
You might have tempted me to try this dipping method once again...
-
Thank you guys. :sm_pirate_smile:
I\'ll tell you what Antipater the dip method has opened up a whole new aspect to my modeling and gaming.I can now realistically have a chance to both paint and play the miniatures I own and that is a very nice feeling indeed! :sm_pirate_biggrin:
I\'ve divided my collection of miniatures into two parts to satisfy my wants and desires.Part of my collection of armies I paint my normal method of high detail work to satisfy my desire to have some quality miniatures and the other half I use army painter on to actually get some armies finished. This is working well for me and keeps me in balance where I no longer feel like I\'m treading water anymore.The only problem I have is which armies to do with army painter and which ones to do quality work on,but that\'s still much better then before were I couldn\'t finish anything. ;)

a very good looking army :sm_pirate_thumbs1:

:thumbsup:
Very good. You only need some enemies now to vanquish beneath your chariots :D
-
Thank you gentlemen! :sm_pirate_smile: More chariots soon to follow.

That\'s what I\'m trying for at TTU! :diablo: :P

Almost there and getting close to the wire.This is the prince and his chariot retinue.They are armored with light armor,shields and javelins which is the latest in Trojan warfare.They have also added more color to their chariots and shields.The shields and chariot boxes were painted by hand and the rest is AP with a quick highlight.Just one more infantry unit to go........but only a few days to do it!(Gulp!) :sos:

This is my second unit of Trojan spearmen with the shields hand painted and the rest done with army painter and quick highlights added like the other Trojans.I just barely finished these in time for TTU and so I had no time to post them until now.

This is the 1600pts.completed Trojan army I used at the TTU gaming weekend.It was led by King Diometores and his son Hectores(not very orginal I know) where they fought for the Assyrian allience.They defeated some Hittes and lost to Egyptians and in a large multi player game participated in a hard fought draw.
(http://i400.photobucket.com/albums/pp84/khraid/Trojans/P1060134-1.jpg)
I will eventually make it a bit larger with a spearmen and chariot unit modeled after the princes more colorful and modern equipment,but that will be sometime in the future.For now the army is finished and I\'ll move on to some of my other projects .I hope some of you enjoyed the Trojans. :)

nice army, perfect work!

Oh yes, they are very stunning! I had the chance to see them in flesh at the TTU, and they looked even better than here on the photos! :hutab: It was also a pleasure to talk to you, cheers for all the painting hints and all the talking about your projects :D Hope to see you at least next year again!

Dem schließe ich mich an. Die Kuhhautschilde machen echt was her. Die Verkleidungen der Streitwagen und die Frisuren der Sea People sind mir persönlich zu bunt. Auch wenn ich Punk cool finde.

Yes,I well understand your point.Sadly,my photography skills are not very good and the color came out brighter then it actually is.They are colorful,but not so intense as the photo.After the battle,the are going to an ancient version of the sex pistols concert! :sm_pirate_lol:
