Titel: In The Service Of Kings(Update 14.09.11)
Beitrag von: Axebreaker am 18. Januar 2011 - 12:46:06
This is my latest project an El Cid/Reconquista period army for Warhammer Ancient battles that I\'ve been intending to do for years
now,but just finally got it together to do it.
It\'s an all mounted force that is mercenary in nature where at times it found itself employed by Muslim Taifa Kings ,but more often
then not in the employ of the Christian kingdom of Aragon between the years 1090(King Pedro) and 1135(Alfonso I) covering both El Cid\'s period and the early Reconquista under Alfonso I \"The battler\".The time line, personalties and armies involved, plus the look is my favourite for this period.
The General is Christian by nature and for using the lists in the book, but after that it has a real mix of Christian and Moorish cultures in appearance to reflect their various masters they have served over the years.
I want the army to look as if they are all part of the same force, but still retain their individuality. So,I did the bases, shields and banners in uniformed colour, but varied the designs to keep the individual look.By doing this, I was able to paint the clothes in different colours without losing an army identity and still stay somewhat within period background.
I did some minor conversion work in helmet adjustments and adding more length to their garments to try and give more of Spanish knight feel to them.
The army is done using army painter, but with added highlights which costs significant painting time, but is still faster then black lining
and doing the eyes. However,I will add that the white charger, white bits on the horses, shields and banners were all painted normally without AP.
First up is a unit of unit of Caballeros Hidalgos(Noble Knights) who were the cream of the Christian armies consisting primarily, but not exclusively of the wealthynoble born.Like I mentioned they have a very Moorish flair to them to represent their cultural make up and their various employers they fought for both Christian and Moors.
The General is naturally the grizzled veteran on the white charger.I decided to grey his hair and even add some white to represent the
hardship of years of hard campaigning. The army standard is carrying the large Lion banner which represents the commanders personal heraldry. The other knights are his personal bodyguards and most loyal supporters.
More pics on my blog for a few more angles http://christopher-bunkerhill.blogspot.com/.

Thank you for reading and viewing. :sm_pirate_smile:

The army is done using army painter, but with added highlights...
The results are stunning.
But overall I like the mixture of christian and moorish troops, which gives it a very individual touch. Like to see more... :applaus:

Time is ticking down to September, so I\'ve started back on my El Cid to insure it gets finished.

Next unit is some Caballeros(Common knights) that are employing the overhead striking method of attack suitable for exploiting gaps quickly in the enemy\'s formations. For this reason their banner remains small for speed.
As with the others I used AP with highlights added and completely hand painted the shields and banner. These also like the Caballeros Hidalgos received additional longer robes added to further give that Spanish/Moorish flair.
I\'ve also painted up a bishop for the unit(the one with the large cross) to give some inspiration to the Caballeros.
Thanks for viewing . :)

This is unit of Jinetes who were arguably some of the best light cavalry in Europe during their time in history.
Since
the nobles tended to join units of Caballeros I tried to place an
emphasis on their status as less wealthy common men who either through
preference or lack of monetary means served in Jinetes. For this reason I
left off adding flowing garments that were not modelled on and kept the
shields plain and mostly unadorned. Like the rest of the army I kept a
Moorish and Christian mix with them.

I do quite often add a bit more to the bases, but not with these as I prefer to to emphasize the dry climate and while it\'s true maybe more vegetation could be in evidence I just felt it would detract from my theme. About the only thing I could add I suppose is a few rocks here and there. :)

Thank you guys! :)

@Robert

Playing El Cid at TTU could be a possibility and regards to us having a game if I do bring it, then sure......if you actually come that is. ;) I haven\'t decided if I\'ll make an Impetus Samurai or Romano British army for TTU(depends on who is interested), or join in on the Naps and play WAB El Cid.

@Lothar

The whole entire army is a mix of Perry, Artizan, Crusader and Conquest miniatures.

This is my latest instalment of Caballeros Hidalgos for my El Cid army
with some more of the noble sons of Spain now pictured here on a full
tilt charge led by an inspirational cantador featured on the black
stallion with a small guitar strapped to his back.

A cantador was a form of bard that would sing stories of knightly
adventures and virtues which was to help inspire the knights to exert
themselves to feats of valour.......and sometimes it worked and
sometimes not.

Again the models are done with AP with extra highlights added except
shields and banner which are completely hand painted from start to
finish.

Just one more unit of Caballeros to go and that will complete the army
for the event. I\'m struggling to get it done, but I think I\'ll make it.
Thank you for viewing. :)

Considering the fact that most people hate painting cavalry, your output of (great looking) painted knights is just astonishing   ;)

First off J.S. I wish to say thank you! :)

I won\'t kid you in the fact that it\'s been a tough challenge painting an all cavalry army especially when one bears in mind I usually prefer painting and playing infantry armies. However, as of late it seems the armies I\'m either thinking of doing or actually doing contain a healthy amount of cavalry and so I\'d better start to like painting horses more! :pinch: I think the problem with most folks(myself included) is trying to decide where to highlight the horses unlike infantry where it\'s usually pretty obvious.

I won\'t lie and deny that I\'ll be pretty happy when I finish the last unit of Caballeros and I can get a break from painting horses for a bit of time! :sos:

I think the problem with most folks(myself included) is trying to decide where to highlight the horses unlike infantry where it\'s usually pretty obvious.

..and that\'s the reason why my crusader spanish disappeared in a shoebox one day, waiting for the day of their glorious return which will probably never come  :whistling:
But I have to admit that this problem is more or less exclusively limited to 28mm miniatures; in smaller scales like 10 oder even in 20mm I more than once had the problem that the infantry: cavalry ratio reached some quite unhistorical dimensions  ;)  (Ok, when dealing with 20mm plastics is do not highlight at all; white primer > thin coat of a tamyia color spray, probably brown > army painter >horse done; fairly simple, but effective )

The last unit finished for the event!!!!! (pant, gasp,.......I made it!)
This last instalment for the event project is a another unit of
Caballeros who have now thrown their throwing spears and have drawn
their swords for close work to finish the attack.

Again, like the other unit of Caballeros they have a smaller standard
compared to the Caballeros Hidalgos whose role is pure shock troops. The
smaller standard allows them to move quicker as they try to break up
enemy formations with javelins and then when the enemy is disorganized
they launch their assaults which is more in the traditional method of
Iberian fighting rather then Caballeros Hidalgos adopted Frankish style
of fighting.

As with the rest of the army I mixed Christian and Moorish looks
together to give that Iberian feel to them. I continued using AP with
highlights and hand painting shields and banner.
Thank you for viewing. :)
