Hi all!
First of, my apologies for writing in English. Like many Dutchmen I have no problem reading German, but writing it without butchering your language is another matter...
As you hopefully know, Wargames, Soldiers and Strategy is back among the living and, as of this month, can be found at large train stations and airports throughout Germany (http://cdn.wssmagazine.com/cms/images/stories/wssretailgermany.pdf). Thats not why I\'m writing however. The reason I\'m posting here (and elsewhere) is to ask German wargamers to come forward and propose articles for WSS. Guy Bowers and I are very keen to make sure WSS does not become a UK/US only magazine. So, if you have a good idea about rules, a masterful brush-technique or would like to discuss some aspect of (historical) wargaming in general, please let us know. Worries about English should not stop you. We can (and will) fix it and can, in exceptional cases, even take care of translating an article!
We hope to have much more continental European input soon!
Kind regards,
Jasper Oorthuys
-
-
Hi Jasper,
what a beautifully small world this is. :) It\'s been a while since the translation project of Ritterlings legio, but it\'s sure good knowing, you\'re still around. What kind of articles would you like to get covered? Or maybe, what does WSS not do? Here are some people (not me...) doing very well crafted gaming mats. Maybe you would like to take a look here: http://www.sweetwater-forum.de/index.php?page=Thread&postID=74402&highlight=spielmatten#post74402
I hope, you\'ll be around more often,
Kind regards,
Christian Urs
-
Weitermachen! :imsohappy:
-
Hi guys,
Thanks for the welcome. I didn\'t expect to be immediately covered in an avalanche of ideas. That\'s okay, I just wanted to get the word out that we\'re definitely interested in hearing from people outside of the \'usual suspects\' in the UK and US. It\'s an open invitation.
And yes, Christian, good to see you! Hmmm, that project needs a kick(start) in the pants! :sm_pirate_igitt: Those mats look really cool. A \'how to\' article would definitely be something we\'d like to see!
Best wishes

Hi Jasper!
According to one of the members of this Forum, they try to charge 14€ at the newagent at the railwaystation in Munich. This would be a little bit to expensive :tot: . Even more then for the old WSS (10€)
Cheers
Bernhard
-
Whaaaat? Thanks for the warning. I\'m going to check that immediately with our distributor. The official cover price is €4.95, tripling that seems a little, errr, insane?
-
Yes insane indeed! Perhaps you remember I told you at the Salute that you have to have a price around 5 € to compete with WI in Germany.
-
I agree! We\'ll see what the distributor says. Hopefully it was an employee who made a mistake.
Jasper
-
Hi, I\'m the member how should have got charged the 14.95€.
I denied and consisted on 4.95€, the employee told that international press is always more expensive then the printed price -> I went away, I had business to do and didn\'t wanted to arguee for long.
When I came back an other employee sold the issue for 4.95€.
The problem was that there wasn\'t a price saved in the computer of the shop.
Hope that I could helped you.
Greetz
great articel on painting and game review :sehrgut:
-
Ahh, thanks for the explanation. Hopefully that was a one-off problem then. The explanation is *bleep* anyway, as we pay all the transport costs... :m_pirate_shock:
Glad you liked it!
Jasper
-
in Dresden main station there the same shit like Neidhart (http://www.sweetwater-forum.de/index.php?page=User&userID=46)s problem...
12,95 Euro cause international press... thats too expensive for me... sry* :S
-
It\'s good I found out early. As I said, I\'ll talk to the distributor and see what they can do. It ought to be 4.95 (which is printed on the cover in fact, unless they got the \'English\' version).
Jasper
-
Hallo beisammen,
-
Input:
Any period is fine really, just shift the focus away a bit from the English and their obscure micro-engagements.
My personal preferences would be everything 1812-14 minus Spain and a closer look at rennaisance-
wargaming in the far east. Also - I\'ve seen some really brilliant and ground-breaking tutorials here in
the forum (tags: DonVoss/Dr.Puppenhaut - gaming-carpets!). I\'d buy a Mag just to have these nicely layed out
and printed really. Well maybe not for 15 bucks, but that\'s another story. :)
-
Hi J.\'S.: There\'s a link in my first post to a PDF list with all shops.
Schrumkopf: thanks for the ideas, I\'ve already been pointed to those tutorials and I\'d love to publish them! Hopefully the author reads this too!
Jasper
-
Hi Jasper,
I bought the magazine for € 4,95 this morning. A good issue even if ACW is not my favoured theme.
What I appreciate is that I can buy now Ancient Warfare in book shops. Will Medieval Warfare follow this way?
Kind regards,
Macaffey
-
Those mats look really cool. A \'how to\' article would definitely be something we\'d like to see!
Hi Jasper,
I would be honoured to write a step by step article (with photos of course). Here you can see some of the mats I\'ve already made: http://www.ulmer-strategen.de/Weitere_Galerien.htm
Is there a big hurry or would it be all right if I\'d sent you a draft in a few weeks?
Very best regards,
Tobi
-
Macaffey: that\'ll depend on how well AW and WSS do... Also, it\'s not only our decision, as the distributor has a say as well.
Tobi: no hurry at all. As soon as you\'re ready, send a note to Guy (editor *at* WSSmagazine.com) and we\'ll take it from there.
Best wishes
Jasper
-
Sadly it is standard for foreign press to get \"price-upgrades\" like that at train-station kiosks.
-
Hi all,
The distributor tells me retailers are not allowed to set another price than the one printed on the cover 4.95 euros... I\'m not sure it\'ll help to tell the salespeople, but you can try. :D
-
Gruss
Olaf
-
If anyone encounters other cases of WSS or AW not being sold for the official price (€4.95 resp. €7.10), please let me know. Our distributor is ready to come down on those stores like a ton of bricks! :sm_pirat_cool:
And as Olaf says, subscriptions are very affordable, especially now (http://www.karwansaraypublishers.com/shop/wss-magazine/subscriptions.html) !
-
Hello, I\'m American, but I do live in Germany. I\'m familiar with Guy from the WAB forum through conversations and I might contribute to the magazine with time permitting of course. I do quite a few different periods and so is there anything in particular your looking for? Really do need to subscribe. :)
Christopher
-
Hi Christopher,
Ami\'s are very welcome too :sm_pirate_lol: Period doesn\'t really matter (though I looove your AWI work out of personal interest :sm_pirat_love:) . What matters to us is GAMING! Scenario\'s, ideas, modelling and painting tutorials would all be most excellent.
-
-
Glad to hear that, but suggestions for improvement are always welcome too!
Jasper

Alright then, having spent the evening closer srutinizing your magazine, here\'s my verdict. As already mentioned I really like the reviews and the figure and rule comparisons. For several reasons, the articles themselves are unfortunatelly a different matter. First of all their quality differs quite a lot, the \"tactics of the civil war\" article representing the bottom level both content- and language wise. The line between writing in a clear, understandable way and sounding like a 3rd grader is a very thin one and in this particular article it definitely went wrong. The combination of far too many one liners and far too few sub ordinate clauses, conjuntions or any other means which give a text some cohesion creates a very unpleasant read.
Also on page 48 (to name just one further example): \"Simílar to the 2nd Generation line, the drummer boys are sculped to look like boys and not like men. It is a very nice touch.\"
Why two sentences? [...], giving the miniatures a very nice touch / ,adding a nice touch to the figures/ ,which is a very nice touch. ec would have been more elegant solutions.
I know I sound like a nagger here, but you asked for some honest criticism ;)
Summa Summarum: good ideas, partly mediocre realization; nevertheless, I\'m looking forward to future issues.
-

J.S., in all honesty, putting one subclause after anothre is very German. Not that I would have written the sentence in the same way, but making this two sentences is perfectly okay. In fact, it is something teachers try to teach German students, since they often lack the ability to make a point. Literally... Besides, even if suggestions are welcome, calling a third person a 3rd grader, is not respectful. Especially when he writes in a language that is not your mother tongue. Sorry to say so.
-
It\'s perfectly alright to give your opinion J.S., we put a magazine out there, which means we\'ve got to be able to take criticism. If it helps us to improve the mag, only better. Besides, I\'m Dutch and according to our reputation, I ought to take as well as I can give! :sm_pirate_lol:
-
In fact, it is something teachers try to teach German students, since they often lack the ability to make a point. Literally...
That\'s exactly what I tried to tell my students this morning...
Tomorrow, I\'ll pay our station book store a visit and try to get the WSS.
-
J.S., in all honesty, putting one subclause after anothre is very German.
So is it? As luck would have it, i\'ve got a pile of WI issues on my desk and here\'s an aribtrary example from the next best copy at hand:
There were 40,000 British troops now occupying little more than a few coastal cities and towns, and the royal navy was stretched almost to breaking trying to supply them while fending off French fleets from the English Channel to the West Indies. Moreover, the territory inland was lost to the British and there seemed little hope of turning that around, at least in the northern colonies. (WI 1265, p. 10)
According to your theory it should rather read like this:
There were 40,000 British troops now occupying little more than afew coastal cities and towns. The royal navy was stretched almost to breaking. It tried to supply them while fending off French fleets from the English Channel to the West Indies. The territory inland was lost to the British. There seemed little hope of turning that around, at least in the northern colonies.
If this sounds ok to you- fine. I personally prefer the first version. You should keep in mind that we aren\'t dealing with a blog entry or a free-of-charge pdf. download, but content I payed for (the \"Tactics of the Civil war\" article is even promoted on the cover page..);therefore, comparisons with you pupils at school are not really appropriate here.
And hey..if that\'s my major point of critique, the WSS mag can\'t be too bad. The rest is really perfectly fine ;)
-
Alright then, having spent the evening closer srutinizing your magazine, here\'s my verdict.
J.S., I\'m quite impressed. Your verdict? So you\'re something of a Judge Dredd, giving out verdicts after having read one issue? I stand in awe. I\'m reader of WSS beginning with the first issue and I have all issues since its rebirth (for which I\'m grateful) and I have to say it is the very best magazine around (and yes, I have also subscriptions of the others). Still that is my humble oppinion only, since I\'m not in a position to give a verdict :thankyou: .
-
Well yes, when it comes to grant new stuff access to the very limited space of my faithful billy shelf I sometimes behave like judge dredd :whistling:
Access wasn\'t denied to WSS by the way ;)
-
Access wasn\'t denied to WSS by the way ;)
A wise decision ^^
-
Hi,
is there a chance to get a distributor in Wiesbaden (besides it\'s the new American HQ in Europe ;) )
WCT
-
I too am pleased that WSS was granted access. :sm_pirate_thumbs1:
WCT: that will probably depend on how well these issues sell... But I can ask!
-
I too am pleased that WSS was granted access. :sm_pirate_thumbs1:
Here it was even granted subscription. :D

Obviously I\'m really liking this forum so far! :sm_pirat_love: :sm_pirat_cool:

:)

Got the WSS and the AW in Kassel today. Both were sold for the correct price. The AW was easy to find, it was with the other international press. The WSS was placed with the magazines for youths as it contains miniature wargames like the White Dwarf. :pinch:
-
Well, try explaining that grown men play with toy soldiers too! :sm_pirate_biggrin:
-
Sorry Gentlemen, but I surrender.
I got the no. 56 at the Railway Station in Duisburg. One of 2 pieces. I was a lucky man.
Since 3 weeks I try to get there the no. 57. They told me that they had ordered 2 (!) pieces again, but no one arrived. They don´t think that they will get the WSS furthermore.
Snif Buääääh! :crygirl: :crygirl: :crygirl: :diablo:
Best regards

Hi Frank
WSS is distributed Together with Ancient Warfare. The latter was delayed this month, but sent to distributors last week. I expect both to turn up soon!
Jasper

Hello Jasper,
Thank you for the information.

Frank
-
Yeah - I have it! :applaus: :walklike: :tanz: :neo:

Hi Frank,
If you like, I\'ll be happy to bug our distributor again to make sure Duisburg station gets copies of WSS. Miniaturicum ought to have them too, you could send them an email to ask if they have the latest issue. Again, I\'d be happy to bug the distributor.
I\'m not sure I get the meaning of Schwund, but a sub to Germany costs €29,95 at the moment. That\'s 25 eurocents more per year than buying individual copies at the store. We try to keep subs as affordable as possible, but, you know, printers, DHL, they all want money...
Jasper
-
ich hab auch ein digitalabo für 15 €! Am Hauptbahhof hamburg gabs das bisher immer.
-
I\'m not sure I get the meaning of Schwund...
\"Schwund\" means something like \"loss\".
I do think that he mentioned that his letters or magazines tend to get nipped from his letterbox from time to time, so that a subscription would not really be his solution.
-
Ah. That\'s annoying! It should still make no difference as we always replace non-arriving copies. Or perhaps digital is an option?
-
Does Düsseldorf main station still carry WSS? I was unable to locate a copy there since issue 58 and I stopped asking because the staff I encountered had no clue what I was talking about... :cursing_1:
-
I\'ve just emailed our distributor. I\'m sure he can clear up the situation. Sorry you\'ve been having difficulty finding your favorite (I hope! :P ) magazine.
Jasper
-
Hi Jasper,
Thank you for your support.
I contacted Miniaturicum as you suggested. Regarding Duisburg: The book shop at the central railway station of Duisburg has changed the owner. In the past it was a good source for international press, but now... I must say sorry.
Further the time and the costs for the parking place at the railway station are not nice, if you \"travelling\" twice each week to see, if your magazine is in the shop.
That´s why I´m searching a good sorted (online-) shop.
Regarding \"Schwund\" - it´s a nice german description for \"stolen\".
@Strand:
Best regards
Frank

Well, the first year of distribution always seems to be difficult. After a while, people know about a magazine, know where it goes and have some confidence in whether it sells or not. I\'m confident from now on WSS will appear more regularly, and if you all constantly ask your bookseller for it, in steady quantities in German bookstores.
If it doesn\'t work, well, I think our mail order is pretty good. :)
-
Hello anybody,
I get the last 3 numbers (57-59) at FF mainstation in the bookshop. Normal price, 4,95€. But I don\'t know the publishing date of the next copys, can\'t find it in the WSS or on the homepage.
Best regards Sebastian
-
WSS is always published on the 1st of very odd month, so 60 was out on May 1st, 61 on July 1st.
Jasper
-
Hi there,
just to inform WSS readers in the Düsseldorf region. I visited the book shop in Düsseldorf Central station today and I was told, that they expect the new issue Friday next week. They will have four copies only.
Regards
Macaffey
-
My contact at the distributor seems to be on vacation, but this should answer the question. Thanks!
-
Checked at Cologne station, they ordered 6 copies this time, which are scheduled for tomorrow, friday, or next week. They will be sold at a cover price of 4,95 Euro. All the earlier issues, of which the had 5 each, completely sold out.
-
W-u-n-d-e-r-b-a-r-!

No - at Duisburg Central Railway Station.

Negative, Sir. I phoned them and they said, there should be five left. If only they could find them... They seem to have vanished.

This morning at Koblenz main station there have been 3 copies when I entered an 2 when I left. ;)

http://www.karwansaraypublishers.com/shop/wss-magazine/wss-single-issues.html
PayPalzahlung und gut ....
-
Super Link Jens. Den kannte ich auch noch nicht.
-
Wieso bestellt Ihr es nicht direkt ??
Weil\'s dann 2,99 Porto kostet?
-
Dann ist ja alles gut!
-
Weil\'s dann 2,99 Porto kostet?
@WSS team: you are producing a great magazine! I hope Ican read many more issues of this magazine
-
