Shimazu Samurai(Update Samurai Charging 13.06.12)
« am: 29. Mai 2012 - 12:31:11 »

This is the start of my Impetus Shimazu Samurai project. Why choose the Shimazu clan? The reason is I really like their background as an underdog clan that is tough as old boots. While they are not a tiny clan or even what I\'d term small, they are also not what I\'d call a super huge clan either and this really appealed to me as I like the smaller or less well known clans more then the really big well known powerful ones. The clan will include allies from the Arima clan which is a small clan they teamed up with to defeat another larger clan. The colours and mons from these clans I also like.

First up are some Ashigaru Arquebusier.I decided for a brown armour for my Ashigaru mostly because I like earth tones and since I\'ll be painting Ashigaru more then Samurai I should use colours I really enjoy the most. Of course the Samurai will wear various coloured armour.

I wanted a nice contrasting colour to the brown, but again opted out on the more common black, white, red and instead went with a light blue which works out very well for me.

Thanks for viewing:)

More to come.

The type of manlets were not specific to one class thus different types and shapes were used by all . The fence like one I believe your referring to was primarily but not exclusively used vs Cavalry and if they expected to encounter a great deal then that was a good choice, but if facing large numbers of Ashigaru then one need to prepare vs arrows more then cavalry making a solid manlet more appropriate. It also depended at what was at hand. ;)

Outstanding Work Christopher!
Beside it\'s so cool that you choose the Shimazu clan. When we started to plan Samurai here I also wanted to do the Shimazus but one of my mates persuaded me to choose Takeda as he wanted to do Uesugi and is a big fan of the yearly Kawankajima festival... So I went for Takeda - well impersonating the tragic faction of Kagemusha is a great compensation :) But for the Shimazus beeing underdogs - I disagree with that - they may not be so well known in the West as the houses of Hojo, Uesugi, Takeda, Oda and Tokugawa but they were a major clan even before and throughout the period and managed to hold their provinces which were roughly as big as the ones of the Hojos or Takedas for the whole period and even the fact that they sided with the wrong side at Sekigahara did them no big harm except that of coursetheir power declined like all houses in the following Tokugawa period.
It\'s really a pity that you life so far away otherwise your Shimazus would make a spectacular Impetus opponent for my Takedas.
But back to topic again - I bow in reverence before your painting skills

I did say they were not a tiny or small clan. ;) They were indeed a large clan, but not as famous as some big names are probably due to location more then anything I suppose. By underdogs I meant many of the battles they fought in they were frequently(but not always) outnumbered by as much as 2 to 1 or more and still they came out on top thus earning them the phrase \"tough as old boots\" by me.
