Montrose\'s Scots Royalist Army ECW(Update 05.11.13)
« am: 10. September 2012 - 12:11:44 »

This is part of a project I\'ve started with a friend based around the Scottish campaigns in the English Civil War. I\'ve decided to
build the forces of that wily commander Montrose and my friend is building the Covenanter\'s.

My Montrose(ish) army isn\'t an attempt to exactly replicate what the forces of Montrose looked like, but rather a melding of
Scottish and English together so I can use it as both a Scottish Royalist army and a Northern English Royalist army. I like the
history of Montrose and Rupert so I\'d like to use it for both. Basically it will be my own impression with quite a few liberties
taken. Hopefully the end result will still be convincing enough to not totally offend the purists out there.

I\'m starting off with a regiment from the rock hard Irish brigade in which I mixed Bicorne\'s Irish and English together which
gives them a mixed and slightly ragged appearance (except the officers) which I feel they probably looked something like that.
The Irish were noted for usinga half pike, but I prefer the full pike and so went with that. They also wore a greyish top and
white leggings(many did any ways) of which I included in the mix, but I changed the top to mostly green for two reasons.
The first is I\'ll have plenty of grey to do when I do the regular Scot units and well......they are Irish and green just darn
well belongs!:-)

The figures are from Bicorne and the English figures are simply superb(best ECW around IMHO) and the Irish figures are pretty
good too if not quite as good as the English figures. I painted them using AP with highlights added. The Flag is from Flags of War
and while it looks wonderful it\'s a little small for me, however I heard he\'s now making them bigger and so I probably replace it
with a bigger one.

God save the king!
Thanks for viewing! :)

Noch sind wir zwar keine gefährdete Art, aber es ist nicht so, dass wir nicht oft genug versucht hätten, eine zu werden.

Very nice indeed. Colour composition, highlights, bases, choice of poses etc. is all very, very good. I have only one little remark regarding the background: It seems the trees cast a shadow on the blue background. Maybe use a stronger light source to get rid of any shadows or move the background back a bit, so that the trees can not cast a shadow on it. However, keep up the good work and I look forward to see more of your troops.

Thank you very nice of you. :) You are right on the background as I really didn\'t put that much effort into that part as it was late at night and I didn\'t feel like doing more pictures......lazy I guess. :whistling_1:

Christopher, your work is always outstanding.. Moreover, I am impressed of the speed of your paintjob ( without losing quality ) - confess, in reality Christopher is a painting studio consisting of more than 10 guys :D

Thank you! :D
I confess I have a paint crew that works for me and I whip them regularly to paint faster! :smiley_emoticons_outofthebox: Seriously though it\'s all me. :) Speed comes with practice(I\'m old so lots of practice! ^^ ) and knowing what paints you want to work with and how.

That said I\'m not as fast as a painter as you think. I paint in variety of different methods of which all of them require different time lengths to do. The figures above took me roughly 40-45min. each as I only blocked in the colours then applied AP and then added one highlight to most things and two on the flesh. My Samurai on the other hand take me a very long time to do as I paint in layer method adding several highlights and so a couple hours each at least.

Some more Irish ready for battle!

Figures are Bicorne and flags are from Flags of War new larger ECW flags.

I\'ll be doing some Renegade and Redoubt figures for the Scots part of the Montrose army next.

Thanks for viewing! :)

That\'s an impressive amount of minis per unit, so a wise decision to use AP  and the result looks good to me
I would like to go into the ECW too, but the amount of minis for a good P&S ratio keeps me away as also the unresolved multiple project problem  does

Thanks Tellus. :)

They way I use AP doesn\'t save me much time as I add highlights, but it does save me some of course with is helpful. ^^

My units are 36 strong. That is quite a few, but you don\'t need as many units for games as you do Naps so in the end the figure count isn\'t as bad as it may seem. ;)

Ever seen a figure you had to have? Well this was one for me and it\'s from Redoubt miniatures. It shows what a commander is often doing and not always charging down the road.

And when does he put away that useless sheet of paper and start charging down the road? :P
