AndréM:
Problem Solver

The armed forces of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth are not especially numerous when compared to the massed military strength of the great powers, but their battle skill and courage are unparalleled. Long years of warfare have honed the Commonwealth Hussar Legions into veteran fighting units capable of facing off against the worst an enemy can throw at them.

A large part of the Hussar Legions’ effectiveness lies in their ability to dictate the flow of the battles in which they fight. The Commonwealth has developed a unique doctrine of highly mobile warfare, relying on fierce hit-and-run style raids rather than grinding battles of attrition. The Hussar Legions reflect this, being built around massed companies of highly mobile armour and artillery, backed up by squadrons of their famous steam-bike cavalrymen.

Because of their resource-hungry nature, the Commonwealth does not field much in the way of very heavy armour or large war engines of its own – they are generally seen as too slow and cumbersome to incorporate into the nation’s military doctrine. Also, its alliance with the Russian Coalition makes the lack of home-grown machines less crucial.

However, one type of large war engine employed by the Commonwealth is the Zamiec Class Sky Fortress. Not only are these the primary prestige war machines of the nation, they also serve a vital tactical and strategic purpose.

The Commonwealth general staff long ago realised that, given the nation’s largely indefensible borders, fixed installations other than the fortifications of major cities were a liability. Static airfields in particular were thought to be very vulnerable to being overrun and while they were crucial assets, defending them by conventional means would absorb military power that the Commonwealth could not afford to divert from its mobile forces.

The Zamiec Sky Fortress was developed to solve all of these problems. It utilises a mixture of Russian and Britannian technological refinements, being partially based on the rotorcraft principle. Heavily armed with cannons and smaller calibre quick-firing guns, it also carries squadrons of Commonwealth-modified Zhnets-pattern aeroplanes.

The Zamiec’s purpose is to provide the Hussar Legions with integral mobile air support, ensuring that Commonwealth aerial units have the fastest response time possible to requests for assistance from the ground forces.

A lot of the nation’s Sky Fortresses are directly assigned to the Hussar Legions, rather than operating autonomously. Having the bulk of the Commonwealth aerial forces airborne in their own right also eliminates the need for vulnerable ground bases.

But the Zamiec has one other quality that makes it an important asset to the Hussar Legions. As well its aerial interceptors, the Sky Fortress can also carry a squadron of light tanks within its extensive cargo bays.

These can deploy rapidly from the machine around a key objective, taking and holding crucial points on the ground while benefitting from the Zamiec’s aerial support and massive firepower. Such attacks often come as a great shock to enemies already unbalanced by the powerful strikes of the armoured Hussar Legions.

A Word from the Designer

The Hussar plays a very important role when mapping out the national identity of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in a world at war. The military doctrine and the weapons they wield reflect the same idea of fast, agile combat.

The whole shape of the model is made to give the feel of the lancer; look at the way the long narrow deck is slung under the winged blimps, pointing ahead menacingly with its forward facing weapons ready to ride down any adversary from above. Mean turrets and heavy propellers assisting the lift of the craft add a little more life to the craft and the sleeker bulging dirigibles also lend an air of speed to the shape itself. The Sky Fortress ended up being a fantastic centrepiece model for one of the latest Alliance nations, standing out with style above the armoured might of the rest of the Polish forces.

Super!

The Unshakeable

Protectorate of Belgium Flag

The Liege Class Land Ship is more akin to a giant steam-powered fortress than the Land Ships of the other Great Powers. Although less mobile than its contempories, the Liege more than compensates with the considerable firepower it can unleash from its pair of turrets and gargantuan rotary mortar.

The Liege Class is the pinnacle of flexible defensive strategy. It is heavily armoured against incoming fire, and has multiple Ack Ack batteries to repulse aerial aggression. The Liege is even designed to embed itself into the earth once it has found an optimal position. With its ground clamps firmly in place, the Liege becomes a stable, unshakeable firing platform, allowing even greater accuracy with its formidable weapons.

As such, it finds its greatest use to be forming a solid battle line, around which the rest of the Belgian forces can operate. Against these fortresses, their enemies can hurl countless resources with little hope of breaking the defensive formation.

Studio Sparta Launches!

Spartan Games is thrilled to be launching Studio Sparta - our brand new mail order business. We have a very creative and imaginative team of designers who produce award-winning products for various game systems, but their creativity does not stop with our core game systems. Indeed, they often go places we have never even dreamt of going and we end up with models that, until now, had no place in the Spartan Games product portfolio.

We can\'t suppress this creativity and we think you will agree that the models are just too good to be locked away in the designers imaginations.
That\'s why Studio Sparta is here.

What Is Studio Sparta?

Studio Sparta is a mail order company that offers a diverse range of figures, vehicles and scenery that do not have any of the constraints of being locked to our core games, and are not limited to models that can be mass-produced for stores to stock. This allows us to make more complex models, to dabble in areas that we find exciting, and we think you will also find exciting.

Studio Sparta is where we let our designers loose, allowing their imaginations to run wild and produce some of our most unusual models. Just like all our other products, they are high quality, highly detailed and great value for money. Some will cross over to existing game systems, but many will have nothing at all to do with fantasy naval, giant spacecraft or Victorian super science fiction.

What\'s First To Be Available From Studio Sparta?

FIRESTORM INVASION: PLANETFALL

Firestorm Invasion is our view of ground-based warfare in the Firestorm Armada galaxy, but the way we have approached the concept of enacting brutal ground-based combat is, we think, somewhat different.

Planetfall: Dindrenzi Federation vs. Terran Alliance

If you think about it, the act of invading a planet is not a simple one! To fully subdue your enemy we think you\'ll need to embrace three key Phases of game play. The first phase is brutal ground-pounding combat using massive forces of tanks, ground attack craft, mechanical walkers and heavily armoured infantry. We call this Planetfall and it will be presented in 10mm scale.

You can get stuck into Planetfall straight away as Studio Sparta launches with the Dindrenzi Federation and Terran Alliance Kickstart Boxes as well as a range of other models that you can add to your force. The Kickstart Boxes offer amazing value for money, including an unbelievable number of stunning models, a full colour Rulebook, dice, a measuring aid and lots more. You can also enjoy special introductory prices on all Planetfall models, so head on over to Studio Sparta and start building your collection!

THE INVADERS HAVE LANDED

We love Victorian super science fiction. We also love the idea of alien invaders descending to Earth and obliterating all who dare to stand before them! Sooner or later, we knew we would bring these two together and so the idea of the Invaders was born.

The Invaders land in Studio Sparta!

The current Invaders range consists of their intimidating Walker war engines and swarms of insect-like flying support craft, including the terrifying Hive Ship and the devastating Invader Cruiser. Soon you will be able to field whole armies of these strange, deadly bio-mechanical creations.

It\'s not only in Dystopian Wars where the Invaders can walk. The models have been designed to fit comfortably with almost any scale of miniature. Imagine the Invaders attacking units of 15mm scale Firestorm Invasion Terran Infantry, or marvel as 10mm scale Dindrenzi armour is pulverised by devastating weapon systems onboard an Invader Hive Ship.

No gaming table is safe from their relentless march! Go to Studio Sparta and indulge yourself...

GOLIATH

Standing literally hundreds of scale feet tall, Goliaths dwarf the largest of ships and even many great castles and fortresses ashore. When consumed by battle fury, one can shatter an entire fleet or crush an entire town underfoot. Some Goliaths even delight in causing great waves sufficient to swamp coastal settlements and enough to scour them from the shoreline. It is an extraordinary model that is sure to be the centre piece of your ever-growing Uncharted Seas collection.

The Goliath stands literally hundreds of scale feet tall

These models will be shipping from September 5th 2012. From today, you can place your advance orders in the Studio Sparta Online Store to ensure you do not miss out on these exciting new releases.
