I think your asking when a flank attack is considered a flank attack.
Flank/Rear attack penalties to unit only happen if the attacking unit
started it\'s move
completely behind the horizontal line of the front of the defending unit.If this criteria is not met then it\'s always considered a frontal attack for the reminder of the combat and therefore no penalties.
Movement of the defeated unit is directly away from the frontage of the main attacking unit(the one with the most frontage) in the direction he is facing.
If the attack actually did come from the flank and if the unit is forced to retreat then it is routed and removed from play with all units 5U directly behind it becoming disordered and losing 1 permanent VBU if the broken unit was
not an S, Cl or Arty unit.
