This is a Trojan army I will be playing at next summers
Tabletops United 5 am 3+4. Juli 2010 in MĂĽnchen/DachauWhen completed, the army will be quite large with around 11 Chariots and 140+infantry miniatures. To accomplish this I decided on using Army Painter(strong tone),because my normal painting method makes this impractical to try.
The army is designed right around the Trojan period itself and according to many historians and Homer himself this was a time of transition from early tactics and equipment and later more updated equipment and tactics. With this in mind,my army will have a mix of early and late equipment. For me this is very nice,as I can model and paint both periods.
I\'ve never been a fan of light toned bases for my miniatures and almost always have used a dark brown as I really like the contrast. However, since I\'m fielding Trojans a dark brown base simply won\'t do.I did some internet surfing on dry climate terrain and hit upon a reddish brown that I quite liked.I decided to base my army on this as it fulfills my desire to not have to light a base, but still give that arid/dry feel to it.To further emphasize this I went with sparse dried grass.
I also went for very wide based unit for both looks and anticipation of things to come in WAB2.
First up is a unit of combined Spearmen/Archers.Many depictions show the early Trojan spearmen to have very long spears and I decided to reflect this in spears that border on pikes(80mm),but in games terms act as a thrusting spear.Plus.I just like how it looks.
After giving a base color(lighter then normal)to each area.I then brushed on army painter. The only exception is the shield faces in which I hand painted these.
I gave a quick highlight to the speartips and clothes.I did not highlight the flesh, wood,or bone.I also did not black line or paint in the eyes.By choosing to avoid most highlights, black lining etc. I greatly speeded up the process, because if I did do all the normal steps then it defeats the whole purpose of using army painter.

So,for time spent vs results then I must say I\'m quite pleased.

Here are some close ups of the spearmen.I went with a slightly darker skin tone as this reflects their Mediterranean background. Also, the shield rims were done with army painter applied to include the boss. The cow patterns on the shields were hand painted and received no army painter.I also tried to give the appearance of hairlike cowhide in which I hope I succeeded. The reason is I wanted this part of the model to look very nice as I think this is a hallmark of a Trojan army and probably the main reason I collected Trojans in the first place and so I didn\'t take any short cuts with this part of the model.

More to come for those interested..............
Cheers
